# EN AW numbers simply explained

> Structure of the aluminium designation to EN 573: EN AW, four digits, series 1xxx to 8xxx. Tempers to EN 515 (O, H111, H24, T6), comparison with the old DIN.

Wrought aluminium alloys carry a four-digit number according to EN 573. The first digit indicates the main alloying element.

## Structure using the example EN AW-5754 [AlMg3]

1. **EN** European standard
2. **A** Aluminium
3. **W** Wrought alloy (casting: C)
4. **5754** Series 5 = magnesium
5. **[AlMg3]** Chemical designation

A letter A at the end (e.g. 1050A, 2017A, 5005A) indicates a national variant of the base alloy.

## Alloy series

| Series | Main element | Strength through | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1xxx | Aluminium at least 99.00 % | Strain-hardening (H) | 1050A |
| 2xxx | Copper | Age-hardening (T) | 2007, 2017A |
| 3xxx | Manganese | Strain-hardening (H) | 3004 |
| 4xxx | Silicon | – | – |
| 5xxx | Magnesium | Strain-hardening (H) | 5005, 5754, 5083 |
| 6xxx | Magnesium and silicon | Age-hardening (T) | 6060, 6061, 6082 |
| 7xxx | Zinc | Age-hardening (T) | 7075 |
| 8xxx | Other elements | – | – |

## Tempers to EN 515

The temper follows the number, e.g. EN AW-6082 T6.

| Temper | Meaning |
|---|---|
| F | As fabricated, no specified strength |
| O | Annealed |
| H111 | Annealed, slightly strain-hardened by straightening |
| H14 | Strain-hardened, half-hard |
| H24 | Strain-hardened and partially annealed, half-hard |
| H32 | Strain-hardened and stabilised, quarter-hard |
| T3 | Solution heat-treated, cold-worked, naturally aged |
| T4 | Solution heat-treated, naturally aged |
| T5 | Quenched from hot working, artificially aged |
| T6 | Solution heat-treated, artificially aged |
| T651 | As T6, additionally stress-relieved by stretching (plates, bars) |

Old designations such as F39 or F51 come from DIN: minimum tensile strength in kp/mm² (F39 ≈ 390 N/mm²).

## Comparison with the old DIN and 3.xxxx

The US designation (Aluminum Association) uses the same four digits, e.g. 6082. The certificate supplied with the delivery is binding.
