Calculate bend radius and minimum flange

Choose material and sheet thickness. The calculator shows the limits of our press brake for your part – the same rules the configurator uses to check every bent part.

Choose material and thickness: inside radius and minimum flange appear instantly. All values as a table: Design rules per material.

What the values mean

  • Inside radius: the radius on the inside of the bend at 90° with our standard tool. It results from die, material and sheet thickness; we have measured it on our press brake.
  • Minimum flange: shortest flange that rests securely on the die during bending, measured on our press brake.
  • Hole to bend edge: minimum distance from the hole edge to the bend (at least 2 × thickness + inside radius, a little more depending on the die), so that the hole stays round.
  • Bend length: longest edge we bend in one stroke.

All limits per sheet thickness in one table: Design guidelines. Weight of your part: Weight calculator.

Frequently asked questions about bending

What is the minimum flange when bending?

The shortest flange that still rests securely on the die during bending. It depends on the die opening, which we choose according to the sheet thickness. Shorter flanges slip into the die and become inaccurate.

Which inside radius results from bending?

In air bending, the inside radius results from die, material and sheet thickness. We have measured it on our press brake for each die. With thin sheet it is usually larger than the sheet thickness (between 2 and 3.8 mm for 1 to 2.5 mm). The calculator shows the radius to use for your flat pattern.

How far must a hole be from the bend edge?

At least two sheet thicknesses plus inside radius, measured from the hole edge, a little more for wider dies. The calculator shows the value for your sheet. That way the hole stays round during bending.

Do the values apply to every material?

The calculator uses our current material catalogue. It also shows up to which thickness we bend a material. In the configurator, the same rule checks every part before ordering.
