Aluminium: which alloy?

AlMg3 (5754) is the all-rounder for sheets: seawater-resistant, easy to weld and to bend. Al 99.5 (1050A) is softer and the easiest to form, but has little load-bearing capacity. AlMg1 (5005A) is the choice for evenly anodised or painted visible surfaces. 5083 is stronger and intended for thick plates in shipbuilding and vehicle construction. 6082 can be age-hardened and is easy to mill, but can be bent only to a limited extent. 7075 and 2017A are high-strength machining materials – not for welding and not for bending.

Stainless steel: 1.4301, 1.4571 or 1.4016?

1.4301 is the standard for kitchens, interiors and normal outdoor areas. 1.4571 contains molybdenum and withstands chlorides better, for example de-icing salt or near the sea. 1.4016 is a ferritic, nickel-free chromium steel: magnetic, less expensive and intended for dry indoor areas. 1.4841 is for high temperatures in furnace and firing construction. Brass: Ms 63 or Ms 58?

Ms 63 is easy to bend, form and solder – the brass for sheet metal parts and decoration. Ms 58 contains lead, which makes it very easy to mill and drill but hardly suitable for cold forming; it is intended for machined parts.
