S235JR is the most widely used unalloyed structural steel and our standard material for blanks and bent parts. It can be welded, bent, drilled and painted without any of these operations requiring special knowledge. For most structural, mechanical engineering and repair work it is therefore the economical choice.
Properties
- Yield strength at least 235 N/mm², tensile strength 360 to 510 N/mm²
- Easy to weld with all common processes
- Easy to form, forgiving when bending
- Not corrosion-resistant: coat or galvanise for outdoor use
Surface finish
Bright, pickled surface with a light film of oil from the mill. Raw steel starts to rust in damp air within a few days. Plan a coating if the part remains visible.

Design rules and bending
Bending up to 6 mm sheet thickness. The material springs back little and is uncritical to bend.

Cutting methods and tolerances
We cut rectangular blanks on the guillotine shear. DIN ISO 2768-m applies to length and width; the cut edge is sheared, and a slight roll-over and a burr are normal in production. We laser-cut parts with cut-outs, holes or free contours.
Typical applications and bent parts
- Brackets, holders and machine parts
- Frames, base plates and reinforcements
- Repair and spare parts
- Anything that is painted or powder-coated afterwards
