Corten steel is the common name for weathering structural steel such as S355J2W: thanks to small additions of copper, chromium and phosphorus, it forms a firmly adhering rust layer in air that protects the material underneath from further corrosion. It is almost always chosen for this look: the warm, rust-brown patina is a design element in garden, facade and object construction.
Properties
- Forms a protective patina within a few months
- Higher strength than S235JR (yield strength at least 355 N/mm²)
- No paint needed, but not a rust-free surface either
- Run-off rainwater stains light-coloured surfaces. Protect plinths and paving
Surface finish
Initially mill finish to lightly rusted. The patina only forms outdoors through alternating moisture and dryness; under a roof the material remains uneven.

Design rules and bending
Bending possible; the material is stronger than S235JR and needs a little more force for it. The configurator checks the geometry automatically.

Cutting methods and tolerances
We cut rectangular blanks on the guillotine shear. DIN ISO 2768-m applies to length and width; the cut edge is sheared, and a slight roll-over and a burr are normal in production. We laser-cut parts with cut-outs, holes or free contours.
