Properties and data sheet

Designation
1.4301 (X5CrNi18-10), commonly known as V2A
Density
8 kg/dm³
Thicknesses
0.5, 0.8, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 mm
Processing
Laser cutting, bending, deburring

1.4301 is the most widely used stainless steel and covers most applications where corrosion resistance or a clean appearance matters. It is food-safe, easy to weld and keeps its surface for years – practically permanently indoors, and outdoors too away from sea air and de-icing salt.

Properties

  • Corrosion-resistant to water, steam and many acids
  • For chloride-laden environments (coast, swimming pool, de-icing salt), better choose stainless steel 1.4571 (V4A)
  • Not magnetic as delivered; slightly magnetisable by cold forming
  • Work-hardens during forming and springs back more than steel when bent

Surface finish

Mill finish (2B), without protective film. For visible surfaces we supply the same material brushed (grit 240).

Questions

What is the melting point of stainless steel 1.4301?

Stainless steel 1.4301 (X5CrNi18-10, AISI 304) melts in a range of about 1,400 to 1,450 °C. As an alloy, it has no fixed melting point like a pure metal.Sheet metal range.

What do 1.4301, V2A and AISI 304 mean?

These are different designations of the same material: 1.4301 is the material number to EN 10088, X5CrNi18-10 the short name, AISI 304 the American designation and V2A the common name. It contains about 18 % chromium and 8 to 10.5 % nickel.

Is 1.4301 magnetic?

Hardly, as delivered. After bending or other cold forming, it can become slightly magnetic at the bend. That is typical of the material and does not change its corrosion resistance.

When is 1.4571 the better choice instead of 1.4301?

With chlorides, i.e. salt water, de-icing salt or swimming pool air. 1.4571 (V4A) contains molybdenum and is more resistant there. For indoor rooms, kitchens and normal outdoor air, 1.4301 is sufficient.

Is 1.4301 V2A or AISI 304?

Yes. 1.4301 (V2A) corresponds to AISI 304. Sheet to EN 10088-2.

Which surfaces are available online?

2B, brushed K240, 2R with film. Further versions on quotation in the Sheet metal range.

Is an inspection certificate 3.1 available?

Yes, if a certificate to EN 10204 is on file for the material: as an option in the basket, €15 net per order.

Why is there lettering on my stainless steel part?

Stainless steel sheets carry a mill marking with material and heat number. This is normal and links your part to the inspection certificate. The rolling mill determines where the marking sits on the sheet. Deburring or grinding weakens it, but it may still show through. You can remove the marking without residue using cellulose thinner and a clean cloth.
