Frequently asked questions
Which tap drill do I need for M6?
For an M6 coarse thread (pitch 1 mm) drill or laser a tap hole of 5.0 mm. As a rule of thumb for coarse and fine threads: tap drill ≈ nominal diameter minus pitch.
Which clearance hole for an M8 screw?
According to ISO 273 it is 8.4 mm (fine), 9 mm (medium) or 10 mm (coarse). The “medium” series is the usual value for bolted joints.
Do I have to draw the tap hole in my STEP file?
Yes. For a thread draw the tap hole and for a countersink the clearance hole. In the part designer we set the diameter automatically as soon as you choose “Thread M…” or “Countersink for M…”.
Do you also make fine threads?
As an additional service with an instant price we tap metric coarse threads. Please ask about fine threads via the contact form.
