Your compulsory internship. From idea to component.
Are you looking for a compulsory internship or a technical pre-study internship for your degree? At MVG in Frankfurt you can combine technical and creative ideas with material, design and production.
Are you studying mechanical engineering, product development and technical design, production engineering, mechatronics, materials engineering, product or industrial design, art or design – or are you about to start your studies? If you want to understand how a drawing becomes a component or a design becomes a tangible object, we would like to get to know you. Together we align possible tasks with your focus of study and your university’s internship regulations.
Possible tasks for your internship
Design & CAD: get to know technical drawings and models and examine how dimensions, material and production fit together.
Material & production: compare properties of sheets and profiles and accompany cutting and sheet metal processing in the company.
Art & design: develop ideas for objects, models or prototypes and check together material choice, joints and feasibility.
Processes & digital tools: trace the path from design to enquiry and calculation and work out opportunities for improvement.
We clarify personally which tasks and periods are possible. Before you start, we agree activities, supervision, working hours, pay and the evidence required. Whether the agreed placement is recognised as a compulsory internship is something you clarify with your university.
Do you want to understand materials, design and production in context? Bring your questions from your studies and get to know the practical side of drawings, components and work processes.
Art, design & creative studies
Do you think in shapes, surfaces and objects? Discover metal as a material and discuss with us how designs can be turned into producible models or prototypes.
How to plan your compulsory internship.
1
State your studies & time frame
Write to us about what you study, when you would like to start and how long your compulsory internship should last.
2
Match requirements & tasks
Together we check which tasks are possible and fit your university’s requirements. You agree the recognition with your university.
3
Agree on the start
Before you start, we clarify the area of work, contact person, times, pay and the documents you need for your studies.

Product Development and Technical Design
The 2025 reading version provides for eight weeks of full-time pre-study internship. At least three weeks of this are spent on material processing, surface treatment and joining techniques and at least three weeks on production and manufacturing. Weekly reports and a company certificate are part of the evidence.
The 2021 internship regulations require six weeks of pre-study internship in at least two areas of activity. These include, for example, machining and forming, work preparation as well as design and technical drawing. The individual areas have time limits for recognition. A qualifying reference and a self-reflection are part of the evidence.
For study start from winter semester 2024/25, eight weeks of production internship are mandatory, ideally before starting your studies. You provide evidence of at least three activity groups, at least two of them from primary forming, forming, machining as well as joining/separating processes and physical-chemical treatment. At least one week is required per chosen group.
For recognition you need an activity report and an internship certificate or a corresponding reference. The placement takes place on site in the company.
For mechanical engineering, eight weeks of pre-study internship before starting your studies are planned. The focus is on practical metalworking, for example measuring, marking out, sawing, drilling and simple sheet metal and joining work. Recognition requires an internship report book and a confirmation of the type and duration of the activities.
A separate guideline applies here: at least eight weeks of basic internship before starting your studies in at least three areas of activity, at most three creditable weeks per area. The company must be recognised as an IHK training company and ensure professional supervision.
The regulations also set requirements for the training company: Frankfurt UAS names a training authorisation by the IHK or HWK, TU Darmstadt recognition as an IHK training company. Before an agreement we clarify with you whether the specific placement meets the requirements and whether consultation with the university is necessary. Your university decides on recognition.
Questions about your internship.
Is a pre-study or basic internship also possible?
Send us the requirements of your degree programme and your preferred period. We check whether we can cover the required activities. This also applies to a practical semester or specialist internship.
Do I already need experience with metal or CAD?
Tell us what you already know and what you would like to learn. Existing knowledge helps with planning tasks; we discuss together what prerequisites are needed for your placement.
Can I apply from art or design?
Yes, explicitly. Your interest in combining creative ideas with material and production is particularly fitting. Feel free to send work samples or a project idea.
How long does the internship last?
The starting point is the duration required by your university. Tell us the period and the weeks or hours needed so that we can check the options in the company.
Can I also ask about a voluntary internship?
Our focus is on compulsory internships for students. For other types of internship you can also tell us your background and time frame.
