Weight per metre, per square metre and in total – for eleven shapes and eight materials. Free, without registration.
How the calculator works
| Shape | Cross-section or weight |
|---|---|
| Sheet | length × width × thickness × density |
| Perforated sheet | as sheet × (1 − open area); open area per hole pattern in the Perforated sheet calculator |
| Chequer plate | base thickness × density × 1.07 |
| Round bar | π × d² ÷ 4 |
| Round tube | π × (D − s) × s |
| Flat/square bar | width × thickness |
| Square/rectangular tube | B × H − (B − 2s) × (H − 2s) |
| Angle | s × (a + b − s) |
| Hex bar | √3 ÷ 2 × AF² |
Cross-section in mm² × density in kg/dm³ ÷ 1000 = kg per metre. Radii according to the standard are not taken into account; for profiles with radii the result is slightly above the standard weight. For catalogue items, every Product page the weight per metre according to the catalogue.
Frequently asked questions about weight
How do I calculate the weight of a sheet?
Length × width × thickness gives the volume; times density gives the weight. A steel sheet 2000 × 1000 × 2 mm has 4 dm³ and weighs around 31.4 kg at 7.85 kg/dm³.
How do I calculate the weight of a tube?
For a round tube, the cross-section is π × (outside diameter − wall thickness) × wall thickness. Cross-section in mm² times density in kg/dm³ divided by 1000 gives kg per metre.
What is the density of aluminium, stainless steel or brass?
We calculate with the usual trade values: aluminium 2.70 kg/dm³, steel 7.85, stainless steel 8.00, brass 8.50, copper 8.96, gunmetal 8.70 and bronze 8.80 kg/dm³ – the same values as in our sheet catalogue.
How accurate is the result?
The calculator assumes sharp-edged cross-sections. Tubes and profiles with radii weigh slightly less according to the standard; rolling and thickness tolerances are added. The value is usually sufficient for shipping and structural calculations; the weighed result is the delivery weight.
How do I calculate perforated sheet and chequer plate?
Perforated sheet: weight of the solid sheet × (1 − open area). Chequer plate: base thickness × density × 1.07 for the chequer pattern.
