Stainless steel 1.4301 (X5CrNi18-10, V2A)

The standard stainless steel: rust-free, easy to form, easy to weld, food-safe.

1.4301 is the most widely used stainless steel. It resists water, air and most cleaning agents, can be welded and polished and is approved for contact with food. For chlorides (road salt, swimming pools, coastal air), however, it is not the right material.

Properties

• Tensile strength 500 to 700 N/mm², yield strength at least 190 N/mm²
• Austenitic, not hardenable, practically non-magnetic (becomes slightly magnetic through cold forming)
• Good weldability (TIG/MIG), easy to polish
• Resistant to water, steam, humidity and weak acids
• Not resistant to chloride-containing media

Processing notes

Stainless steel conducts heat poorly and work-hardens during machining: saw slowly, cool well and never work with a blunt tool. Use tools and brushes that have never touched mild steel. Extraneous rust looks like rust of the stainless steel and is hard to remove.
