EN AW numbers simply explained

Wrought aluminium alloys carry a four-digit number according to EN 573. The first digit indicates the main alloying element.

Structure using the example EN AW-5754 [AlMg3]

  1. ENEuropean standard
  2. AAluminium
  3. WWrought alloy (casting: C)
  4. 5754Series 5 = magnesium
  5. [AlMg3]Chemical designation

A letter A at the end (e.g. 1050A, 2017A, 5005A) indicates a national variant of the base alloy.

Tempers to EN 515

The temper follows the number, e.g. EN AW-6082 T6.

TemperMeaning
FAs fabricated, no specified strength
OAnnealed
H111Annealed, slightly strain-hardened by straightening
H14Strain-hardened, half-hard
H24Strain-hardened and partially annealed, half-hard
H32Strain-hardened and stabilised, quarter-hard
T3Solution heat-treated, cold-worked, naturally aged
T4Solution heat-treated, naturally aged
T5Quenched from hot working, artificially aged
T6Solution heat-treated, artificially aged
T651As T6, additionally stress-relieved by stretching (plates, bars)

Old designations such as F39 or F51 come from DIN: minimum tensile strength in kp/mm² (F39 ≈ 390 N/mm²).

The US designation (Aluminum Association) uses the same four digits, e.g. 6082. The certificate supplied with the delivery is binding.
